Aspects of early training about the cause and treatment of addiction that are not empirically based. These concepts and ideas are often a mash of ideas, beliefs, and personal experiences that influence one’s work with clients. Part of the accepted culture in addiction counseling and impacts the way addiction counselors perceive and work with clients. Benefits: some treatment lore makes sense and accurately describes some of the experiences and issues that addicted clients have to address in their process of recovery; Drawbacks: it is not empirically based and may result in less effective treatment.
