Contrast the shape, structure, and formation of composite and shield volcanoes
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: The shape is that of a warrior's shield: convex and much larger horizontally than vertically. Basaltic material runs readily over pre-existing lava flows and has very little pyroclastic material. Composite volcanoes are much steeper, composed of much more pyroclastic materials and prone to large explosions.
