Describe the process of long-term potentiation.

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: Long-term potentiation depends on postsynaptic AMPA and NMDA glutamate receptors and the neurotransmitter glutamate. At these synapses, glutamate binds to both AMPA and NMDA receptors. Before long-term potentiation, however, glutamate only successfully activates AMPA receptors. Activation fails to occur at NMDA receptors because a Mg+2 ion blocks the NMDA receptor channel, preventing ions from entering the channel. Long-term potentiation occurs when the membrane depolarizes sufficiently to repel the Mg+2 ion from the channel.
