You can use thin provisioning with storage virtualization. In this approach, you can create LUNs for new servers in the system but assign more disk space on those servers than the actual amount of space configured for the SAN. For instance, a Windows 2008 server that hosts your database may appear to have 100 GB allocated for data storage when only a small percentage of that capacity is actually allocated. Over time, up to 10 GB might be used as the database file is populated. If so, you can save up to 90 GB of disk space but still be able to store more data on the LUN without taking further action.
