What are the amphidromic points of the world ocean, and approximately how many are known to exist?
?
The amphidromic point of an ocean is the node or nodes near the center of the ocean basin. This point is a "no tide" point in the ocean and is the point around which the tidal crest rotates through one tidal cycle. Tidal crests sweep around amphidromic points like the spokes of a wheel from a rotating hub. Tide waves move around these points, counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. The energy is dissipated across the ocean radiating the crests toward distant shores. About a dozen amphidromic points exist in the world ocean, with five of the points being in the Pacific.
