What are the diff erences between radio frequency identifi cation (RFID) and bar code tagging? When would you use one and not the other? What are the benefits of each technology?

What will be an ideal response?

A bar code is a printed code that is read optically into a computer system. The machine readable code will be read into a computer, which will have been programmed to identify the code. From that information, it can output information about the item or, for example, assign it a price at a supermarket checkout.
RFID uses small microelectronic chips to store information. The tags can be affi xed to a product in a similar fashion to a bar code. The RFID tag can be read or “interrogated” by a scanner or transponder. Interrogated means the tag does not have to be physically located to read it. The transponder will detect many items in a shopping cart without a
checkout clerk having to handle the items.
The bar code is a cheap and easy-to-use technology: Manufacturers can easily add a bar code at the production or packaging point. It is convenient and has accelerated the checkout process at supermarkets. The downside is that every product must be handled individually so
the bar code can be read. RFID tag chips cost more than the printed bar code. This cost is the main reason why RFID tagging has been less
