NEC 513.1 defines an aircraft hangar as a location used to store or service aircraft that contains gasoline, jet fuel, or other flammable vapors. Areas used to store aircraft that have never contained flammable fuel or that have been drained and purged are not included in this definition. In general, any pit located below floor level is considered to be a Class I, Division 1 location. Any area up to a level of 18 in. (450 mm) above the floor, any area within 5 ft (1.5 m) of the engine or engines, any area within 5 ft (1.5 m) of fuel tanks, and any area extending 5 ft (1.5 m) above the surface of the wings or engines is considered to be a Class I, Division 2 location.
