What powers hurricanes, and how do winds move within these atmospheric disturbances?
At its base, air is sucked in by low pressure in the hurricane's eye, its center,
and rises rapidly to the top where the winds spiral air outward. The rapid upward movement of moisture-laden air produces enormous amounts of rain. The power that drives the storm is increased by the massive release of latent heat energy from condensation. Upper air returns to the surface through the hurricane's eye.
