Discuss the issue of truancy and chronic school absenteeism. What is truancy? What is chronic absenteeism? To which other problem behaviors/conditions are the two related? What are some of the recommendations that have been offered to those who are working to reduce truancy and chronic absenteeism? Why is it difficult to develop effective truancy programs?

What will be an ideal response?

At a minimum, students should explain that truancy is the habitual, unexcused
absence from school which exceeds the number allowed under state law. Truancy is the
most common status offense. Chronic absenteeism is when students miss more than
10% of school during an academic year. Both of these are associated with poor
academic performance, increased school suspensions and expulsions, substance
abuse, dropping out, and delinquency adjudication. Examples of suggested practice will
vary across students but should include some combination of the following: addressing
truancy from multiple fronts, understanding emerging knowledge on adolescent
developmental issues, investigating and treating trauma, engaging and involving the
family, understanding gender differences and developmental pathways, redirecting
those with disabilities back toward school rehabilitation services, training first
responders on diversion, and the use of graduated response and meaningful incentives
for attendance problems.
