Describe an advantage and a disadvantage of single-case experimental designs relative to multiple-groups designs.
What will be an ideal response?
The advantages of single-case experimental designs are that (1) they can be used to show an effect with a single individual; and (2) they avoid the ethical problem present in multiple-groups designs of withholding a potentially beneficial treatment in order to provide a control group. The disadvantages of single-case designs are that (1) baselines stages can demonstrate excessive variability or increasing or decreasing trends in behavior and (2) they can be of limited external validity because of testing only limited numbers of individuals.
