The Act placed drugs into five separate schedules with clear and definitive descriptions of their usage and harmful potential. Title II of the law is the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), which classifies psychoactivedrugs according to their degree of psychoactivity andabuse potential.
I. High potential for abuse
• No currently accepted medical use in the United States
• Lacks accepted safety standards of use under medical supervision.
• Marijuana, heroin, opioids, hallucinogenic substances, peyote, mescaline, gammahydroxybutyric acid (GHB)
II. High potential for abuse
• Currently accepted for medical use
• May lead to severe psychological or physical dependence
• Cocaine, opium, oxycodone, methadone, morphine, Seconal, methamphetamine, and other amphetamines
III. Potential for abuse less than the drugs or other substances in Schedules I and II
• Currently accepted for medical use
• May lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence
• Anabolic steroids, ketamine, hydrocodone, and a number of barbiturates and sedatives downers
IV. Lower potential for abuse relative to the drugs or other substances in Schedule III
• Currently accepted for medical use
• May lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence relative to the drugs or other substances in Schedule III
• Some antidiarrheal drugs; some partial opioid analgesics; some sleeping pills such as Zolpidem; long-acting barbiturates; and benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Librium, and Valium blues, peaches, bars, zombie pills, no-go pills, A-minus
V. Low potential for abuse relative to the drugs or other substances in Schedule IV
• Currently accepted for medical use
• May lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence relative to the drugs or other substances in Schedule IV
• Some cough suppressants, anticonvulsants, and selected prescription pain pills
