Why does ANOVA use variance instead of mean differences in its calculation?
What will be an ideal response?
We cannot use mean differences when we have more than two groups because there would be more than one mean difference to consider. Thus, ANOVA uses variance terms based on the sum of squared differences between the sample means and the overall (grand) mean to give us a value in the numerator of our statistic representing the effect of the treatment plus error.
