Who were the Abbasids?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. They claimed their descent from Abbas, an uncle of Muhammad. After years of civil war they overthrew the Umayyads and established a new capital, Baghdad. For almost three hundred years, Baghdad was the center of Islamic culture; the Abbasid rulers were well known throughout the world and even established diplomatic relations with Charlemagne at Aachen. They lavished their wealth on art, literature, and science and were responsible for the translations of numerous Greek texts.
