Cite the characteristics of aluminum that are responsible for cold starts and craters when welding.
What will be an ideal response?
• Thermal Conductivity – The high thermal conductive properties of aluminum rapidly transfer the thermal energy throughout the aluminum work pieces at the beginning of a weld causing the start of the weld to be cold.
• The rate of thermal expansion and contraction when welding aluminum causes it to expand during the weld and to contract greatly as it cools which results in craters at the end of aluminum welds.
