As many as 80% of new mothers develop the “baby blues” within a few days of childbirth. However, some women later develop more serious symptoms of depression, termed “postpartum depression.” The prevalence of depression with onset in the first 6 months postpartum ranges from 6.5 to 12.9% across studies, peaking at 2 and 6 months after delivery. This disorder not only affects the mother; it also has ramifications for the social, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral development of the child.
