Explain three criticisms of the successful aging paradigm. Ultimately, how do attitudes and the realities of aging interact?

What will be an ideal response?

Critics of this paradigm argue that focusing too much on the ideas that self-efficacy, optimism, and other personal characteristics can contribute to good health may lead to feelings of despair and futility in those with significant physical impairment. Older adults do need to be aware that many physical and cognitive abilities are going to decline, no matter what they do. Another criticism is that research may focus away from finding cures for many of the diseases of aging. Ultimately, it is important to balance optimism with reality in order to age successfully.
