Social anxiety disorder usually precedes the emergence of AN and BN and persists after treatment. “Many adolescent girls and women with eating disorders are extremely sensitive to criticism by others and have histories of avoiding situations in which they might be negatively evaluated by others. These individuals also frequently show a high need for approval by peers. Some may use dietary restriction and/or purging to assume physical appearances that meet the approval of others and enhance their social standing . . .” which can lead to AN or BN.”
