Discuss large mammals of the Pleistocene. What will be an ideal response?
During the Pleistocene, temperatures were considerably colder than today. Some mammals
developed larger sizes in order to lower the ratio of surface area to volume. This decreased
surface area to volume ratio allowed more of the heat that the animal generated to be retained.
Many of these mammals also developed a thick insulating layer of fur to further help retain
internal heat.
