Briefly describe what is meant by a pioneer species

What will be an ideal response?

Pioneer species are among the first to colonize a new substrate after a severe disturbance that creates the conditions for primary succession. Pioneer plant species usually have airborne dispersal mechanisms such as windblown seeds or spores or floating propagules for coastal ecosystems. Pioneer species such as lichens or mangroves begin the process of soil formation, paving the way for other vegetation and eventually animals to establish. Pioneer animal species would include flying or windborne insects and small birds.
