One of the most significant reasons to focus on the needs of older women is that they are the fastest-growing section of the population in the United States and the world. Another reason is that gender structures opportunities across the life course, making the aging process and quality of life in older age markedly different for men and women. The problems of aging are increasingly women's problems. We do not know as much about older women because they were nearly invisible in gerontology until the mid 1970s.
