The IEEE 802.11v protocol is designed to assist with the management of WLAN devices. This protocol, which is expected to be ratified by 2008, contains the following features:
* Load balancing-The 802.11v protocol will force wireless clients to associate with a specific access point if more than one is in the area. Depending on how many devices are already associated with an AP, a device may be directed to an AP with fewer devices to distribute the load more evenly.
* Automatic configuration-Instead of forcing the user to select the access point to be associated with, this protocol will enable a network manager to direct a device to a specific AP over the network without the need to manually configure each device.
* Preserve battery life-The 802.11v protocol contains schemes that will significantly save battery life on low-powered devices such as telephones using VoWLAN.
