Injunctive norms dictate what ought to be done in a situation and inform the individual of the rewards or punishments associated with following (or not following) the norms. Descriptive and injunctive norms are said to affect the individual’s behavior if he or she is made aware of them; if the norms in a situation are made salient, the individual knows how to behave in norm-consistent ways.
