Why did early attempts to promote a nationalistic American art music fail?
What will be an ideal response?
Because of ethnic diversity in this country, it is difficult to find a music that speaks to all segments of American culture. While some regionally-based folk music, such as American cowboy songs, have become nationally-known, there was little material that directly spoke to composers of art music. Early art music composers tended instead to base their works on European models.
