What is a GID? How is it assigned?

What will be an ideal response?

The GID is a number assigned to a group. The number must be a value between 0 and 60000.  GIDs up to 499 represent system groups. GIDs beyond 999 are used for normal groups. YaST warns you if you try to use a GID that is already in use. The default GID ranges for system and normal groups are defined in the /etc/login.defs file.
