When excess cholesterol, high blood pressure, or smoking exist, the endothelium of arteries can be damaged. The combination of the cholesterol, fatty acids, immune cells and debris form a plaque. Plaques can increase in size over time and lead to blockage of the artery. Plaques can also rupture into the lumen and in response, a clot forms that may obstruct further blood flow. If this occurs in an artery of the brain, a stroke occurs. If it occurs in one of the coronary arteries, a heart attack occurs. Atherosclerotic plaque is the underlying cause of coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease.
