Eugenia Wedridge is in menopause, is having hot flashes, and is worried about developing osteoporosis. She is thinking about using hormone replacement therapy to take care of all of these problems

What can you tell her about the risks of hormone replacement therapy?

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: In the past, hormone replacement therapy was commonly used for extended periods of time to treat the symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, vaginal dryness) in postmenopausal women, with a secondary effect of preventing osteoporosis. Now, however, it is known that these hormone drugs can increase the risk of endometrial cancer, breast cancer, stroke, and myocardial infarction. Hormone replacement therapy now has a limited use in the long-term treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
