List the stages in the eukaryotic cell cycle and identify the principal events characteristic of each stage. What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: The cell cycle consists of Interphase (consisting of the G1, S, and G2 phases) and the M phase
(consisting of mitosis and cytokinesis). In the G1 phase, the cell makes preparations to
duplicate the DNA, in the S phase the DNA is duplicated, and in the G2 phase the cell
prepares to divide the chromosomes. In the M phase the chromosomes are divided, and in
cytokinesis the cytoplasm is divided.
