Specifics may vary slightly, but HITECH was passed as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The HITECH portion of the law is meant to increase the use of electronic health records through an incentive program. Hospitals and physician practices will receive stimulus money if they adopt or upgrade an electronic health record and show that it is being meaningfully used to improve patient care and increase efficiency, thus cutting healthcare costs.
