There are three standards of proof that are critical to criminal investigations and criminal trials. First is reasonable suspicion, which occurs when given an officer can provide a particularized and objective basis to suspect wrongdoing. This standard is needed to conduct a stop and frisk. Next is probable cause, which exists when it is more likely than not that a particular conclusion is true. This standard is needed to make an arrest or to conduct a search. Finally, proof beyond a reasonable doubt is the standard needed to obtain a conviction in a criminal trial. This means that the judge or jury may have some doubt, but it may not be significant or meaningful.
