In the 1990s, the United States and Russia reached agreement on two strategic arms reduction treaties: START I and START II. These treaties produced dramatic reductions in the number of nuclear warheads stockpiled by both countries. Then in 2010, President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev signed the New Start Treaty in which these nations promised further significant reductions in their stockpiles of nuclear weapons. The New Start Treaty was approved by the U.S. Senate and came into effect in 2011.
