By default, filters change the pixels in a layer and, therefore, are considered destructive; however, you can use the Convert to Smart Filters command to convert your layers into smart objects that make the filter adjustable. Recall that smart objects are layers that preserve the source content of an image with all its original characteristics separately from any filters, edits, or styles. Smart Objects enable you to perform nondestructive editing to the layer. A filter added to a smart object is called a smart filter. Smart filters add to the size of the file on your storage device, but offer the luxury of keeping the pixels in the original layer — in case you want to make further edits, Smart filters also allow you to adjust or delete filter settings. Smart filters retain the name of the filter used and its filter settings, even when those may have been reset by you or another user. A smart filter, therefore, is a substitute for creating a copy of the layer on which to apply filters, and renaming it to include the filter name and settings.
