Answer: Blood moves much slower in the capillaries. Even though the capillaries are very small, there are so many of them that the volume of the capillaries is much larger than the arteries. Total blood flow (liters/min) is the same throughout the arteries, capillaries and veins, so velocity must be lower if the volume is larger.
