Discuss NMDA receptors and compare how they function with other receptors.

What will be an ideal response?

NMDA receptors are glutamate receptors that are unique in that they are not solely chemically gated or voltage gated. Instead, they have a magnesium plug that must be removed by a voltage change before the receptor can become activated by binding of a neurotransmitter. These receptors are similar to AMPA and kainite receptors in that they are technically ionotropic, but they are unusual in their need for two types of stimulation.
