Explain how the use of Bt crops can result in the evolution of pesticide-resistant insect populations. What issues may
arise in this scenario? What will be an ideal response?
As pests (insects) feed on Bt corn, the toxin in the plant will kill all insects that are
susceptible to the toxin. But, due to genetic variation, some individuals will be resistant to the
toxin and will survive. As the susceptible individuals die out, the remaining resistant
individuals will breed with other resistant individuals, creating a population of resistant
insects. The pesticide will now no longer be effective against these pests
