A behavioral approach emphasizes direct instruction through a prescribed sequence of activities. This approach is also interested in examining behaviors that precede and follow particular behaviors. An example might include observing how children work independently at their desk for a period of time. The teacher might use such things as prompting when a child begins to get loud or active when they should be quiet. Good behaviors get reinforced while unwanted behaviors are modified. The instructional technique here is to increase "quiet work time at one's seat" and decrease other behaviors (e.g., being loud or rowdy at one's desk). The limitation with this approach is the degree of structure and precision required to implement it. This approach is also not easily used in conjunction with other theoretical approaches.
