What ethnic and gender differences characterize policing today? What is the social signific-ance of this diversity?

What will be an ideal response?

• This chapter points out that ethnic minorities are now employed in policing in numbers that approach their representation in the general population. Women, however, are still significantly underrepresented, even though they bring many benefits to policing, including better communication skills and a greater ability to defuse potentially violent confrontations. Questions can be raised about the degree of minority participation in the command structure of law enforcement agencies, about the desire of significant numbers of women to work in policing, and about the respect accorded to women and members of other underrepresented groups in law enforcement by their fellow officers.
