Describe the general adaptation syndrome. Your answer should include the history of the term and what happens in the different phases of this syndrome
What will be an ideal response?
Hans Selye coined the term to discuss how the body responds to stress. During the alarm reaction, arousal is caused by the reaction of the sympathetic nervous system and an increase in adrenal hormones. If the stressor persists, arousal will subside during the resistance stage as the parasympathetic nervous system is activated and our body is gaining advantage over the stressor. However, it may be difficult to combat the effects of other stressors at this time. During exhaustion, the general arousal from alarm returns and our body's energy resources become depleted. This could potentially lead to death.
