Explain the visual cliff and how it relates to depth perception

What will be an ideal response?

The visual cliff tests for depth perception. A clear surface is placed on top of a framework. For the first few feet there is something underneath so it appears solid, then it appears that the surface ends in a drop of a few feet (by leaving just the clear surface) If the infant has developed depth perception they will be very reluctant to crawl on the part that appears to drop down – even when being coaxed to. If they crawl right across the "cliff" we assume they can't recognize the apparent change in depth of the surface.
