Ans: Positive and negative skew occur when there are outliers, or values of the variable that are very atypical of the distribution in the sample. These outliers lead to skew in graphic depictions of the distributions. When there are outliers that are extremely low, the distribution is negatively skewed. When there are outliers whose scores are extremely, the score is positively skewed. In each case the mean is shifted toward the outlier and away from the median or mode.
