Interview a direct practice social worker and a social work administrator about some common issues in their agencies related to burnout and compassion fatigue. Ask how they have made efforts to deal with those issues, if they exist.
What will be an ideal response?
For this assignment students should conceptualize burnout as a condition that is characterized by a social worker’s loss of emotional responsiveness to clients, often accompanied by a negative attitude about his or her job, which results from experiencing increasing amounts of job stress. They should define compassion fatigue as physical and emotional fatigue that causes a gradual decline in a social worker’s ability to feel and care for others. When conducting the interview, the student should ask the social worker for his or her own definitions of these terms, and the circumstances in which the social worker experiences it at the agency. The student should try to place the social worker’s coping strategies into one of the following five categories, as listed in the book chapter:
• Passive capitulation
• Finding a comfortable niche
• Withdrawal
• Over-identification with disempowered clients
• Advocating for changes that will help to reduce and prevent burnout
