Describe and differentiate what is meant in REBT by the practical solution and the elegant solution:
What will be an ideal response?
When clients first enter therapy they often want to change the activating event. For example, they want their partners to be more helpful or their jobs to be less stressful. This is known as the practical solution. The elegant solution helps clients change their core irrational beliefs and is more useful for clients because (a) a practical solution may not exist, (b) problem solving to achieve a practical solution is more effective when the client is not irrationally disturbed, and (c) the elegant solution arms the client with a successful response to a potentially activating situation.
