What is the difference between personal distance and public distance?

Personal distance is approximately 18 inches to 4 feet and we use this space when interacting with friends and acquaintances. Public distance is much further (12 to 25 feet) and is used for public ceremonies, lectures, and performances to distance the speaker/performer from the audience.
