Pat is attending a peaceful protest for women's rights in her community. She is concerned because the protest seems to have been predominantly organized by White middle-class feminists. Why might Pat be concerned about this?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers may vary but students must discuss the concept of intersectionality. While White middle-class women may be considered a minority in the sense that they are women--they have many privileges that women of color and/or working class women do not have. It is important that protests and social movements include the unique concerns of all of their followers. A heterosexual White woman will experience the social world in a way that is inherently different from Black LGBT women. This is based on the direct and indirect interactions they have in society. In failing to utilize intersectionality, the protest Pat is attending may be focused on the concerns of only White middle-class feminists.
