Explain the purpose and functions of the oil filter.
What will be an ideal response?
The oil filter is designed to clean dirt and deposits from the internal parts. Contaminants are picked up by the oil and removed by the filter as they pass through a material designed to take out particles down to about 20-30 microns in size. If the filter becomes plugged, a bypass valve will open and allow the oil to continue to flow without the benefit of filtration. There is also an inlet check valve used to prevent oil drain back from the oil pump when the engine is shut off.
