Epipubic bones are lost in the two types of marsupials that evolved a quadrupedal type of cursorial (running-adapted) body form (as opposed to the bipedal stance of kangaroos): the recently extinct thylacines and the extinct South American borhyaenids. The epipubic bones may restrict motions of the trunk and hindlimbs.
