You and the nursing student finish a health history with the family and determine that T.M. has impaired
vision corrected with glasses, a speech impairment, and a seizure disorder and has had poor weight gain
and feeding issues since birth.
He has a skin-level feeding device (Mic-Key button) and receives supple-
mental tube feedings in addition to oral intake. He is not able to ambulate without braces and wears
ankle-foot orthotics. He receives physical, occupational, and speech therapy on an outpatient basis. T.M.
is verbal and able to answer questions with simple phrases and responds to commands. T.M. weighs 12 kg.
Calculate T.M.'s maintenance fluid requirements. Do the IV fluids ordered meet this
requirement? Show your work.
To calculate maintenance fluid needs, use the following formula (Hockenberry MJ & Wilson, D, 2011):
1) The first 10 kg of weight × 100 mL
2) 11 to 20 kg of weight × 50 mL
3) Over 20 kg of weight × 20 mL (the weight remaining after the first 20 kg)
Thus, for T.M.'s weight of 12 kg:
1) For first 10 kg: 10 × 100 mL = 1000 mL
2) Then multiply the remaining 2 kg: 2 × 50 mL = 100 mL
