In contrast, the major criticisms of existential approaches center on the lack of critical research, with the exception of studies completed by client-centered therapists. A second criticism involves its lack of emphasis on a client’s past history with regard to counseling treatment. A third limitation is the tendency of the existential counseling approach to ignore person–environment transactions. Fourth, existential therapies have been criticized as being vague and as using a too global approach to therapy. Fifth, existential therapies tend to lack a systematic statement of the principles and practices of psychotherapy.
