Parents can play important roles as managers of children's opportunities, as monitors of their behavior, and as social initiators and arrangers. Mothers are more likely than fathers to take a managerial role in parenting.
Researchers have found that family management practices are positively related to students' grades and self-responsibility, and negatively to school-related problems. Among the most important family management practices in this regard are maintaining a structured and organized family environment, such as establishing routines for homework, chores, meals, bedtime, and so on, and effectively monitoring the child's behavior. A recent research review of family functioning in African American students' academic achievement found that when African American parents monitored their sons' academic achievement by ensuring that homework was completed, restricted time spent on nonproductive distractions (such as video games and TV), and participated in a consistent, positive dialogue with teachers and school officials, their sons' academic achievement benefited.
