Briefly describe the advantages of and challenges posed by elastic-band (tubing) resistive exercise

As a type of constant resistance training, the use of elastic bands has been shown to help increase strength, mobility, and functional ability (particularly in older adults), and to aid in the rehab of many types of injuries. Some of the advantages to using elastic bands (or tubing) are their low cost, versatility (you can create resistance in almost all angles and directions of the range of motion), variety of exercises for working all joints of the body, and their availability while traveling (exercise bands can be easily packed in a suitcase).

The primary challenge is overcoming the fear that the exercises are too difficult because the resistance is applied during both the eccentric and concentric phases of the muscle activity. However, free-weight or machine workouts can be just as challenging. Additionally, beginners and strength-trained individuals alike can use elastic bands because several different tension cords (up to eight bands) are available and all participants can progress through various resistance levels. That leads to the lesser challenge for beginners: It may be a little confusing trying to determine how to use the bands and how to create the proper loops to grip the bands.
