Explain and give an example of how emblems are specific to cultures.

What will be an ideal response?

Perceptions or reactions to nonverbal communication can vary throughout the world. Emblems (nonverbal codes that can be substituted for words) are not universal. That is, a “thumbs up” sign has a different meaning in the United States than it does across other cultures. There are some emblems that have a wider, shared meaning across cultures, however. For example, the “come here” gesture and the “stay away” gesture are widely accepted as the same gesture across many cultures.
